Pathway to Board

The Pathway to Board programme works with Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people to provide the knowledge and skills required to contribute to the leadership of an organisation.

Why did Pathway to Board start?

The programme started in 2022 to address a lack of ethnic diversity on boards in Wales, both in the housing sector and elsewhere. It aims to provide the tools, knowledge, and confidence for people to succeed on boards.

Led by CCHA and supported by founding members Taff Housing, Cadarn Group, Codi Group and Hafod Housing – as well as by partners Tai Pawb, Newport City Homes, Wales and West Housing and United Welsh – the nine-month programme offers training, practical insights and ongoing support with a host organisation’s board.

This includes a combination of theoretical training and a practical six-month observation of a board.

The project is delivered by nine housing associations in Wales.

Participants receive expert-led training modules, mentoring and boardroom experience.

This includes training modules about internal and external assurance, treasury management, leadership, and interview skills.

Feedback has shown positive benefits for participants, including improving confidence, skills development, supporting board readiness and enhancing board diversity and the pipeline of talent for boards in Wales.

How does United Welsh support the programme?

We also offer the chance to observe our board meetings and work with participants to explore potential opportunities at United Welsh.

In 2023, our Board was pleased to appoint a new Board member who received training through the programme, Bunmi Ajayi-Obanewa. Bunmi is also the Board Diversity Champion.
