Tai Ffres, a youth housing service in development by United Welsh and Llamau, has been awarded over £120,000 National Lottery funding.

Tai Ffres is an alternative housing pathway for young people who do not meet the threshold for homelessness services, or where traditional supported accommodation services would not be appropriate. With the service, young people will be offered a genuinely affordable home, with support if they want it.

The grant from the National Lottery Community Fund was awarded specifically to support the research and evaluation of the Tai Ffres youth housing model.

Working with Cardiff University and peer-researchers from the project, this will include reviewing referral systems; tenancy and rental agreements; accommodation; support and staff practices.

Amanda Oliver, Project Manager for Tai Ffres said:

“We are delighted to receive this financial support from the National Lottery Community Fund.

“The funding will support us to thoroughly explore the experiences of young people using the Tai Ffres housing service, such as how they live in their homes, the location of where they live and their engagement with staff. We will also consider how the model could be scaled up into a universal model of affordable housing provision for young people across the UK.”

Many young people experience homelessness because of financial challenges or family problems, or because they need further support after leaving supported accommodation or care.

With housing affordability a critical issue, Tai Ffres aims to break down barriers for young people in accessing safe, secure, high quality homes.

Tai Ffres is supported by the End Youth Homelessness Cymru project and has also benefited from the Welsh Government Youth Homelessness Innovation Fund.
