Can you tell us about your journey from volunteer to your current role?

“I started volunteering at Llys Nant y Mynydd in 2019, helping out once a week at a knit and natter group. I found volunteering so rewarding and loved the feel-good factor, so eventually ended up also volunteering at coffee mornings and putting on events like fish and chip suppers, Elvis evening (this was very popular!) and bingo sessions, all put on thanks to the resident’s fund.

“In 2022 a Housing Assistant role became available. I enjoyed volunteering so much and felt really comfortable and at home at Llys Nant y Mynydd, so applied, got the job and I’ve been here ever since.”

What does your current role involve, and what do you enjoy most about it?

“I support the scheme manager and partners to make sure everything is running smoothly. Llys Nant y Mynydd is an Extra Care scheme, so we also offer independent living for people over 55 with additional support needs.

“The role is very reactive and no two days are the same, which is something I really enjoy. One minute I could be reporting a repair to Celtic Horizons, and the next I’ll be helping residents to fill in their weekly menu choices.

“As a Housing Assistant, I am the first point of contact for residents. This means I can build strong relationships and get to hear stories about their families and what they were like when they were younger. I think this is so important as it helps me get to know the whole person, and not just as we see them now.”

What would you say to someone considering applying to work at United Welsh?

“I’d encourage anyone to apply. The team are fantastic to work with and are very supportive of each other. United Welsh provides all the training you need to succeed in your role, and there’s a big focus on employee wellbeing.”
