Caring for your garden

Well cared for gardens make a big difference to how we all feel about our neighbourhoods. If your home has a garden, we hope you enjoy using it and making the most of being outside. This page is designed to help you enjoy and care for your garden area. Gardening is also a great way to relax, keep fit and enjoy being in nature.

Looking after your garden

If you have your own garden area, you are responsible for looking after it. This includes cutting the grass and keeping it tidy and free of rubbish.

  • Keep your garden neat, weeded and looked after
  • Trees, shrubs and bushes should be regularly maintained by cutting or pruning them. Please don’t let them overhang other gardens, paths or roads
  • Keep your garden free of rubbish, litter and large bulky items
  • Turn off outside taps in winter to prevent freezing and damage
  • There are a few invasive plants that may grow in your garden; the most common being Japanese Knotweed, which infiltrates the garden and grows rapidly between April and October. It can cause damage to other plants and hard surfaces and must be destroyed by a special chemical method. If you see this plant growing within the planted areas of the property, please contact us and ask for someone to visit and identify the plant.

Caring for your new lawn

If you have a new lawn, or if turf has just been laid in your garden, it needs a lot of care and attention.

  • Avoid walking on new lawns for at least three weeks. This makes sure the roots have been established
  • New lawns should be watered regularly. In the summer when it’s very hot, watering your garden in the evening when it’s cooler is better to avoid burning or scorching the grass
  • In the summer, mow the lawn every 7-10 days depending on the weather and how quick its growing.
  • Use a good-quality fertiliser for your turf lawn, and add it every 4-6 weeks

Communal gardens

Celtic Horizons is responsible for maintaining communal gardens and shared outdoor spaces to keep them safe, tidy, and pleasant for everyone. The grounds team will:

  • Clear leaves and litter from communal areas
  • Cut and maintain communal grass
  • Remove any debris and weeds from communal pavements and roads
  • Look after shrubs and flower beds, including pruning rose bushes
  • Trim hedges and low-hanging tree branches
