Contents insurance

Contents insurance can help protect the things that matter to you if the unexpected happens.

Could you afford to replace everything you own?

If there was a fire, flood or break-in tomorrow, could you afford to replace your clothes, furniture, TV, phone and other belongings? Most residents are surprised by how much it would cost to replace everything in their home. Contents insurance can help protect the things that matter to you if the unexpected happens.

This could include things like:

  • Furniture
  • Clothing and shoes
  • TVs and games consoles
  • Laptops and tablets
  • Mobile phones
  • Kitchen appliances
  • Children’s toys and belongings

The exact cover depends on the policy you choose.

United Welsh is responsible for the building itself. If there’s damage to the structure of your home, we will arrange repairs where this is our responsibility.

This can include:

  • Walls, ceilings and floors
  • The roof
  • Windows and external doors
  • Communal areas in shared buildings
  • Fixtures and fittings that are part of the property
  • Repairs to the building following issues such as fire, storms, flooding or other damage, where covered under our arrangements

In simple terms, if it is part of the building and couldn’t be taken with you if you moved home, it is likely to be United Welsh’s responsibility.

Example

If a fire damages your kitchen, United Welsh would arrange repairs to things like the walls, ceiling and other parts of the building.

The things inside your home are your responsibility. These are known as your “contents”.

Contents can include:

  • Furniture
  • Clothes and shoes
  • TVs and games consoles
  • Mobile phones and tablets
  • Laptops and computers
  • Beds and bedding
  • Curtains and rugs
  • Kitchen appliances you own
  • Children’s toys and belongings
  • Jewellery and other personal possessions

If these items are damaged, destroyed or stolen, United Welsh’s insurance won’t replace them. Contents insurance may help cover the cost of replacing your belongings.

Example

If a fire damages your sofa, TV, clothing and phone, you would be responsible for replacing these items. Contents insurance may help with these costs.

With our partners Thistle Tenant Risks, contents insurance can help pay to replace or repair your belongings if they’re damaged, destroyed or stolen because of things such as:

  • Fire, smoke or explosions
  • Flooding and storms
  • Water leaks from pipes, washing machines or dishwashers
  • Theft or attempted theft
  • Vandalism or malicious damage
  • Falling trees and branches
  • Damage during a house move by a professional removal company
  • Food lost after a freezer breakdown
  • Lost or stolen keys (up to the policy limit)
  • Temporary accommodation if your home can’t be lived in after an insured event

The policy won’t usually pay for:

  • Wear and tear from normal use
  • Items breaking down because they’re old or faulty
  • Damage that happens gradually over time
  • Rust, mould, mildew or corrosion
  • Damage caused by insects, mice, rats or other pests
  • Deliberate damage
  • Damage caused by poor workmanship or faulty materials
  • Loss in value as items get older
  • Claims for items that have simply gone missing with no explanation

The policy also doesn’t cover:

  • Cars, motorbikes and other vehicles
  • Business property used for work (except limited cover in some circumstances)
  • Buildings, walls, roofs or other parts of the structure of your home
  • Most losses if your home has been left empty for a long period
  • Computer viruses, hacking or cyber incidents

Think about everything in your home:

  • Clothes
  • Shoes
  • Bedding
  • Furniture
  • TV
  • Mobile phone
  • Kitchen items

Individually these might not seem expensive. Together they could cost thousands of pounds to replace.

United Welsh is responsible for the building. You are responsible for insuring your own belongings.

No. Whether you rent or own your home, your belongings are still your responsibility. Contents insurance is available to people renting as well as homeowners.

A good way to start is to think about how much it would cost to replace everything you own. Many people underestimate the value of their belongings, so it’s worth taking time to make a simple list of the items in your home.

Ask yourself this question:

If I lost everything in my home tomorrow, could I afford to replace it myself?

If the answer is no, contents insurance may be worth considering.
