Hoarding and property condition

Hoarding is often a sign of other challenges that a person is experiencing.

Our priority is keeping people safe and able to continue living in their home. However, we understand that untidy homes and gardens can cause issues for neighbours and affect community pride.

If you think someone is hoarding or not maintaining their home or garden in an acceptable way, please tell us so we can investigate the issue.

What we can do

  • Build trust with the resident, so we can agree a plan to get the property cleared and cleaned
  • Arrange specialist help and support to help the resident with their hoarding behaviours
  • Seek support to help the resident maintain their garden
  • Work with the local council if there is a public health hazard
  • Make a safeguarding referral if needed
  • As a last resort in serious cases, take court action for an injunction or to gain possession of the property.
