Innovative Scheme for Ely

A scheme to build nine apartments benefiting from state-of-the-art energy efficient initiatives has received a funding boost from the Welsh Government.

The United Welsh development of the former Trelai Community Centre has been allocated a £300,000 grant from the Innovative Housing Programme.

The £1.2 million-pound development in west Cardiff will see the creation of much-needed homes which will be fitted with energy efficient features to help cut bills and be kinder to the environment.

The project will be using a large ground-source heat pump that will harness naturally occurring ground heat to power the radiators and hot water removing the need for traditional boilers which deplete natural gas reserves.

The scheme will be fitted with Photo Voltaic (PV) panels to power communal electricity.  These panels will also be used to harness solar heat to enhance the ground source heat pump supply to each property, utilising as much sustainable energy as possible.

Working in partnership with Cardiff Council and Cosgrove, United Welsh will be developing six one-bedroom and three two-bedroom apartments.

“By using innovative ways to heat these homes we will be helping our future tenants to keep their energy bills as low as possible while also looking after the environment.”

The Innovative Housing Programme enables housing providers like United Welsh to build environmentally friendly, high quality, attractive homes, that can help to reduce fuel poverty and housing inequality.
